In type 2 diabetes, two problems occur: the cells become resistant to insulin and do not absorb glucose efficiently, and over time, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to compensate, which is when insulin therapy may become necessary.
Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels. Early detection and management are critical to avoiding these complications.
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Note: The American Diabetes Association recommends routine diabetes screening for all adults age 35 or older, and earlier for people with risk factors.

- Wear a medical ID bracelet or necklace indicating you have diabetes
- Schedule a yearly physical exam, regular eye exams, and routine dental checkups
- Stay current on flu, COVID-19, pneumonia, and hepatitis B vaccinations (high blood sugar weakens the immune system)
- Check your feet daily for cuts, sores, or changes and wash them gently with lukewarm water
- Manage blood pressure and cholesterol through diet, exercise, and medication as prescribed
- Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol (alcohol can raise or lower blood sugar unpredictably)
- Prioritize sleep: poor sleep makes blood sugar harder to control

Note: Alternative supplements like chromium, magnesium, and cinnamon have not been proven to reliably improve blood sugar control. Always talk to your provider before adding any supplement to your routine.
