Standard Meter vs Continuous Glucose Monitor: Which Is Right for You?

Both fingerstick meters and CGMs measure blood sugar, but they work very differently and serve different needs.

Alternative Site Testing

Some blood glucose meters allow you to take blood from areas other than the fingertip, such as the forearm, palm, or thigh. This can be less painful for people who find repeated fingersticks uncomfortable.

However, there is an important limitation to alternative site testing: readings from areas other than the fingertip are less accurate when blood sugar is rising or falling quickly, which is exactly the situation you most need accurate data. For this reason, fingertip testing remains the most reliable option, particularly when checking after meals, after exercise, or when you suspect a low.
